... FOCUS has waned a little
recently, but STEELY DAN is still popular. We still listen
to gigs we've recorded (a professional chore) and ROUND THE HORN has
been very popular of late. VELVET UNDERGROUND was not popular, but
DAVE EDMONDS, BEN FOLDS FIVE, DIVINE COMEDY & STEVIE WONDER have
been raising our spirits. We're delving into FRANK ZAPPA next tour -
watch this space! Think Floyd |

... Sultans of Swing.... With a day to spare in
Llandudno and the rain pouring down, the whole band treated themselves
to an evening of Big Band swing at the North Wales Theatre. The power
and excitement of a full brass section swinging it away has to be
heard live to be believed. Sinatra classics were handled superbly by
vocalist Andy Prior, but the rhythm section stole the show for us!
Naturally a curry finished off the evening! |

... Think Floyd
banned from guesthouse horror!!!... Well there has to
be a first time, but we have obviously been very naughty boys. We have
been barred from a certain accommodation address for "drink,
smoking, girls an' all, and loud bongo music". Actually there was
a Mexican Pizza, some small quantities of wine & vodka, a couple
of friends and Steely Dan playing very tastefully in the background.
And Pete & Wig were innocent... |

28/04/03 ...
Think Floyd back from break...Think Floyd are about to embark on the second part of
their Spring tour. Rick & Pete fled the country for Easter but are
back now ready for the rest of the Spring tour. May is going to be one
of the most intensive months we have ever toured with fifteen gigs
covering Wales, the North, the South-West & the Home Counties. We
look forward to our second visit to the
Isle of Wight
who gave us a fantastic welcome last year.
Those of
you who are regulars at the Wychwood (
Ashton-Under-Lyne
) know that our set there is always different to theatres. With a
standing crowd who never fail to participate loudly &
enthusiastically we like to pull out some old favourites as well as a
couple of more obscure tracks for the hardcore Pink fans. See us there
on Saturday 3rd May (details in the gig list).
Theatre
audiences, of course, have been enjoying our second year of
performing The Wall album as a concert piece. However, anybody out
there notice the slight differences (musical & dramatic) which
have been added to the show? O.K., the standard lamp's gone (that's
for free).
Finally:
Lewis, Rick & Dave (our talented, stalwart, meditative yet
strangely raspberry-flavoured Sound Engineer) would like to thank
their hosts for the serious partying we were treated to after the
Birkenhead gig and would like to assure our fans out there
that we will follow a bottle of red wine back to ANYONE'S after a gig
with no shame whatsoever..

... Taxiless in Warrington... O.K.,
it's a learning curve but no-one told Rick & Lewis that Taxis are
rare beasts in Warrington. Late-night currying & socialising is
O.K., but if it's going to take asking policepersons of dubious
gender, hooking up with college women walking the streets of a
town they don't really know too well, walking the streets in a random
direction without a compass and THEN waiting over 1 hour for
a taxi to get to the digs... |

... Whats playing in the Think Floyd tour bus Pt.3 ...
We seem to have spent most of the last two weeks in the
van, so our CD player has become a must for all journeys!
The complete "Julian & Sandy" collection has been
very popular of late, Focus always proves to be popular, Frank Zappa,
Gentle Giant, KIng Crimson, The Beatles & Ben Folds Five have all
had a fair listening, but the new Led Zeppelin Live CD was hated by
all except Lewis!

... Communication Breakdown in Barnstaple...Last week's tour of the South West took
us on our last night to Barnstaple - well, 'us' being the band &
lights: the P.A. truck had broken down somewhere not far from
Falmouth. We were early anyway, so many more pints were sunk at the
Wetherspoons across the road before Dave & Lee finally trolled
in. All hands were quick to help out (special Scouts award to Pete
Marland) & after a speedy soundcheck the show went up only half
an hour late. The actors & dancers were absolutely superb (hi to
Spiky, Pretty Squiggle & Batman) and the show went a storm.
UNFORTUNATELY Pete's acoustic refused to cooperate & our
'mellow' section had to be done on electric. Someone up there is not
a Floyd fan..

... Top Guitarists...
Following the request to list our top guitarists, we came up with the
following:-
|
|
Rick:
Jan Akkerman, Robert Fripp, Martin Carthy
Lewis:
Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Dave Gilmour
Pete:
Joe
Pass
, Django Reinhardt
Wiggy:
Jimi Hendrix, Robert Fripp
Other
Mentions: George Harrison, Gary Green, Mark Knopfler,
Johnny Marr |
 | We
were also asked which songs we’d wished Pink Floyd had covered –
very tricky this. On balance, we felt that Pink Floyd played the music
they’d created perfectly and it was unsatisfactory to imagine them
playing other bands’ music. A possible exception might be early
Floyd (with Barratt) covering tracks like
Itchycoo
Park
or middle-period Beatles songs. Of course, there’s that U2 cover on
Division Bell…!

... Mizens Missin' !!...
Think Floyd would like to officially confirm that founder member and
lead guitarist PETE MIZEN has now retired from the band, and will in a
very short time be jetting off to become a native of Spain!
The expatriate life will suit Pete down to the ground, he
already has a home there and is looking forward to his permanent new
life as a Spaniard!
At the end of the
last date of the Spring tour in Fareham, the band toasted Pete
on-stage with some bubbly, and it was a somewhat emotional occasion.
As you can probably imagine, Wiggy, Lewis and Rick have been
looking forward to Pete’s departure with some trepidation. Pete has
been an enormous influence on everyone, both musically and as a super
companion and all-round spiffing chap.
Everyone connected with Think Floyd wishes the old rascal (and
wife Jan) all the very best.
Filling the shoes of
somebody of Pete’s calibre has been a challenge! The band have been
meticulous in choosing the new guy. There were many applications, and
from a short list of outstanding candidates, the boys are now
delighted to unveil our new guitarist. He’s a devout Floydie, an
outstanding musician, and a smashing bloke! His name is Richard Morse.
Richard
starts rehearsals with the rest of the band very shortly, and it is
going to be a very exciting time for us all. Everybody connected with
Think Floyd would like to wish him every success. We’re convinced
that you will absolutely love his musicianship, and that he will bring
much pleasure to our audiences.

... Peterborough Beer Festival...
After
the summer break, Think Floyd are back in action with their new
guitarist, Richard. The first gig was last week at the Peterborough
Beer Festival, and it went down a storm! It's thought that there
was nearly 3000 people by the stage loving every minute! Mike Lane,
the festival organiser said, "I was amazed to hear over two
thousand people singing their heads off. The Performance was
faultless, the sound was great, the choice of tracks suited the
festival atmosphere! All the songs featured were performed to
perfection, the style & stage presence was just right & in
typical Floyd fashion!" |

... Think Floyd play the Liverpool Empire... We
were privileged to play this lovely theatre last week as the opening
to our autumn Wall tour. A large audience were most enthusiastic &
welcoming and convinced us (if we needed it after Peterborough) that
our sound was as powerful as ever. We will be back at St. Helen's
later in the tour so hope to meet up with some of you again. Much less
will be said of our hotel which didn't bode well for the night after
we spotted a "Football Supporters Stay for Half-price" sign
in reception... |

... What's Playing in the Think Floyd Tourbus pt 5: Yee-Hah...
Well it's all gone considerably weirder since Pete
"Mildly-Irritated-of-Waddon" Mizen left the band. Finally
the ban on Jon Anderson "horrible voice, should be bolied in his
own snot slowly" has been lifted and Yes has crept in, together
with The Cardiacs, Steely Dan (again), Simon Warner, 80's Guitar
Heroes (don't ask...), Steve Hackett, Gong and some old Floyd
bootlegs.
Nothing, however, has compared with the hilarity and admiration we
displayed on hearing 'Rebuild the Wall' by Luther Wrong & the
Rights. Described (quite accurately) as a Bluegrass version of the
entire wall album, we have slipped a couple of tracks into our preset
music for those of you who like to get to their seats 15 mins before
curtain-up. We heartily recommend this album to all our fans (except
those with no sense of humour), together with our other recent find:
The Dub Side of the Moon (you guessed it - whole of Dark Side done
reggae style).
Perhaps it is wise to assure our audience that we will continue to
reproduce Pink Floyd on stage in it's more traditional guise. However,
Rick & Lewis have a recording project in mind which may yet rival
these CD's; watch this space... |

... Our set... Think
Floyd are well into the last leg of ‘The Wall’ tour. As there have
been several questions about this, we’ll try to enlighten (Shine?)..
We ARE performing the
whole album in the first half of the show, but in order to bring it in
at a reasonable time, a couple of songs have had to be cut. To be
fair, very few people have told us they were missed (though no doubt
there are some fans out there whose favourite Floyd track is Bring the
Boys Back Home…). However the story is intact from In the Flesh to
The Trial and shortening it a little allows us to pack in as many
favourites in the second half as possible.
Our philosophy is to
play the tracks as near to the Floyd originals as possible, whilst
ensuring the show is exciting live – this may lead to different
endings or improvisations – anyone familiar with live Pink Floyd
sets know that flexibility with material was one of their trademarks.
Have
a listen to the new soundclips from the Wall songs to judge – and if
you’re worried you won’t get to see the whole show, Think Floyd
will be staging some special Wall shows next season (due to popular
demand) alongside their brand new set (to be announced). Watch this
space…

... If
the band you're in starts playing......you'll count
yorself grateful! Recent audiences may have noticed odd sounds in
Goodbye Blue Sky and a more-than-usually mobile Lewis gesticulating
and disappearing off stage. His brand new acoustic guitar (we omit the
make, reluctantly, for fear of litigation issues) started playing up
and cutting out. So he returned it and got a replacement. Which also
played up & made funny noises. So he returned it and got a
replacement. Which was still no good. So he returned it and got a
replacement. Again. (Even thoroughly road-testing it in the shop).
Same problem (this was Aylesbury, detail-fans). Fuming, Lewis trolled
off back to the shop to return said instrument for good, borrowing a
friend's instrument which worked PERFECTLY. Unfortunately his bass
guitar played up that night (Dorking). And the next gig (Birmingham)
along with the monitor. Lewis has decided to spend the Christmas break
recovering from his nervous breakdown with a case of red wine and a
Led Zeppelin DVD. We wish him well. Incidentally, that was not Gollum
crawling around on the stage at our last gig, but Leroy our monitor
engineer trying to fix Lewis's sound...

... What's playing in the Think Floyd Tourbus pt 6...
Apart from the rugby final: Roxy Music, Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Gerry
Colvin, new Beatles CD, Wig's compilation (would you believe Nazereth,
Sting, King Crimson and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band all on one
tape?) and yet more Steely Dan. |
